My research into historical clothing design led me to an interesting first project…a Victorian corset! I had been considering adapting a late Victorian skirt and shirtwaist for my current wardrobe, and came to the conclusion that one thing I really love about the style was the gorgeous silhouette. It’s that appearance of a nipped in waist offset by the flaring skirt and soft-sleeved shirt. In researching it, I came to realise that fundamental to achieving that silhouette is the right undergarment…and that got me thinking, “Is there any place for Victorian undergarments in today’s wardrobe?” And I figured I couldn’t answer that question until I tried.
I took an 1894 Symington corset pattern and tested the fit and process of making it in preparation for the final corset. This corset was labelled no 23270 and can be found on the “Leicestershire in Pictures site”: https://imageleicestershire.org.uk/in… This corset features A LOT of cording, giving the corset a beautiful structure.
So here it is – my first attempt at making a Victorian Corset. The video below only covers that mock-up – I’ll go into more detail on the techniques of making a corset in the final video.
